I’ve decided to add some specialty potatoes and veggies to our crops this year to inspire and teach the importance of loving nutritious food;

I have been a fan of Jamie Oliver for some time now. Aside from his obvious talent as a down to earth chef and tv personality he has inspired millions to pay attention to the nutritional abuse that is happening in schools across Europe and North America. I am in awe of his determination, his humanity and his passion to change the lives of the innocent children of this world.

How, you might ask, can WE make a difference without the broad audience of television, the influence of fame and the power of a network?

The answer is this friends… It is born in your heart, raised in your garden and prepared in your kitchen.

Purple Potatoes

Jamie had me thinking about what I could do to encourage children to eat a healthier diet. Being a small farmer I had an idea…

GROW…COOL…THINGS

Like PINK and PURPLE fleshed potatoes. What child could resist a pink potato salad?! So, I’ve decided to add some specialty potatoes and veggies to our crops this year. Easter Egg Radishes (yes they are all different colours), Warted Squash, Burgundy Beans, Rainbow Swiss Chard and edible Indian Corn!

Although I do not have the broad resources available as Jamie Oliver has….. to inspire, to encourage and to teach the importance of loving nutritious food; I can start here, one baby step at a time.

My hope is that my COOL veggies will make their way to a delighted child’s dinner plate this summer.

Heritage Hollow, an 1850's log home set on 12 acres of heaven, is a small hobby farm in Erin Township owned by the Bray family. Cathy shares her experiences on how to raise chickens and ducks, preserve food, grow cool vegetables and even gives away her award-winning recipes. Log home renovations are always ongoing and critters are always at the front door waiting for a snack. You can find other hobby farming adventures, recipes and maybe a chicken or two over at Cathy’s blog www.thehungryhollow.com

  1. Hi Jessica! Thank you so much for your wonderful comment! Our potato plants are just starting to poke their heads up through the dirt now. It should be exciting to see what we get. :)
